Disgraced former football administrator Kwesi Nyantakyi was arraigned before the Accra High Court on Wednesday, facing multiple criminal charges stemming from the 2018 ‘Number 12’ exposé by Anas Aremeyaw Anas.
The Charges: Filed by the Attorney General’s office, Nyantakyi was charged with:
- Conspiracy to commit fraud
- Fraud
- Corruption by a public officer
Nyantakyi’s co-accused, former GFA Executive Committee member Abdulai Alhassan, faces two charges: conspiracy to commit fraud and fraud.
Allegations Detail: The prosecution stated that the two men executed a fraudulent Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on behalf of a non-existent company, falsely claiming to be securing sponsorship for the Ghana Premier League.
They reportedly demanded $12 million from the supposed investors, with Nyantakyi allegedly detailing how he would distribute the money among top government officials (the President, Vice President, and Roads and Highway’s Minister/Deputy).
Legal and Football Fallout: The exposé, which captured Nyantakyi allegedly taking cash gifts and peddling influence, had already forced him to resign as GFA President and cost him his high-profile positions on the FIFA Council and as CAF 1st Vice President.
Bail and Adjournment: The Accra High Court granted Nyantakyi bail in the sum of ¢1 million and required him to report to the police CID every Friday. The case was subsequently adjourned to March 25.
