Sarkodie: I’m Unmoved by Criticism, Trusting My Gut Over Public Opinion

Ghanaian rapper Sarkodie has revealed his firm strategy for handling continuous public criticism and negative opinions, asserting that he consistently trusts his own artistic instincts over external pressure.

In a live Instagram chat with Nigerian rapper M.I on Saturday, May 2, 2021, Sarkodie stated that he had developed a resilience toward attacks and criticisms since the start of his career:

“From the start, I just developed a strategy to critics. I do what I feel. If I feel like it, I’m going to do it and I have not been proven wrong for a long time, so it’s going to be very hard for an article to change my view,” he said.

Sarkodie highlighted that despite facing backlash from some critics for delivering primarily in his native Twi language, he has successfully maintained his position as one of the biggest and most decorated hip-hop artists in Ghana and Africa for over a decade. He noted that his decision to rap in Twi was a conscious choice to better express his lyrical prowess and connect with his core audience.

Nigerian rapper M.I shared a similar philosophy, recounting attempts by pundits to influence his work. He supported Sarkodie’s approach, emphasizing the value of artistic integrity:

“If you do what your heart tells you to do, at least you can walk away from the game,” M.I said.
