Reggie Rockstone: Ghanaians “Sleeping On” The Power of Music and Its Creators

Ghanaian hip-hop pioneer Reggie Rockstone has voiced his concern that Ghanaians are not fully appreciating the powerful role of music in the country, despite the difficulties people face. Speaking on Class 91.3 FM’s drive-time show on Tuesday, December 19, 2023, he noted that music remains the one constant source of joy.

Rockstone lamented that the public often overlooks the importance of music and fails to give creators the recognition they deserve. He pointed to the massive impact of hits like Patapaa’s viral “One Corner” and singled out Sarkodie for his tireless dedication:

“Sarkodie constantly keeping it up… Rapperholic… This… He’s doing that. This boy! How old is he? He’s working like a slave,” Rockstone exclaimed, expressing deep admiration for the rapper’s work ethic.

He emphasized that artists like Sarkodie, Medikal, and Stonebwoy are crucial representatives of Ghana globally, asserting that their efforts significantly enhance national initiatives like the Year of Return and Beyond the Return.

Reggie Rockstone called for a more intentional strategy to promote Ghana’s music culture, especially to tourists during festive seasons, arguing that it is a missed opportunity if visitors do not experience the country’s rich music scene.

In response to this sentiment and others, the Creative Arts Agency (CAA) and the Ministry of Tourism, Arts, and Culture (MoTAC) recently launched the Play Ghana Initiative. This campaign urges DJs, recreational center owners, and media outlets to prioritize playing Ghanaian music, not just during the “Detty December” festivities but as a continuous practice.
