Prof. Opoku-Agyemang Calls for Excellence and Investment in African Cinema

Vice President Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang has advocated for a more professional and strategic approach to African filmmaking to ensure the continent’s stories can compete at a global level.
Speaking at the inaugural Regal Film Festival and Awards (REFFA) 2025 in Accra, she noted that while African narratives are inherently powerful and culturally rich, they must be produced with a high level of technical and creative excellence to gain international recognition.
She emphasized that maintaining cultural authenticity while striving for quality is essential for the industry to claim its rightful space on the world stage.
In addition to creative standards, the Vice President highlighted the economic necessity of sustainable investment in the film sector. She called on stakeholders to move toward long-term financial commitments, pointing out that a thriving movie industry serves as a vital tool for job creation, cultural diplomacy, and overall national economic growth.
By positioning African stories with purpose and depth, she believes the creative arts can become a significant pillar of the continent’s global identity and prosperity.
