President Akufo-Addo Elevates Techiman to Metropolitan Status to Boost Development

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has officially upgraded Techiman, the capital of the Bono East Region, from a Municipal Assembly to Metropolitan status, in accordance with The Local Governance Act (936). The decision, granted executive approval on October 22, 2024, also elevated Kpone-Katamanso and Gomoa-East to Metropolitan status.

The upgrade is intended to recognize Techiman’s rapid growth and provide the city with enhanced resources and increased funding for infrastructure, social services, and economic development, while opening up new investment opportunities.

The Member of Parliament for Techiman South and Local Government Minister, Hon. Martin Adjei-Mensah Korsah, explained that this elevation places Techiman on par with major cities like Accra and Kumasi, ensuring focused government attention and investment in key areas such as public universities, education infrastructure, and road development for the entire Bono East Region.

Additionally, the Minister noted that the President also approved the upgrade of 12 districts to Municipalities, including Techiman North and Pru East. The elevation of Techiman marks a significant achievement, highlighting the government’s commitment to supporting urban growth across Ghana.
