Asante Kotoko Fan Shot and Seriously Injured After Loss to Berekum Chelsea

A supporter of Kumasi Asante Kotoko was hit by a stray bullet at the Baba Yara Stadium following the club’s 1-0 defeat to Berekum Chelsea in the Ghana Premier League. Contrary to earlier social media speculation that the fan had passed away, a management member of Asante Kotoko, Nana Kwame Dankwah, confirmed the fan was alive but in a critical condition at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital.
Speaking to Joy FM, Dankwah disclosed that the fan, who was hit by a police bullet, was receiving urgent treatment in the hospital’s emergency unit.
The incident occurred after Asante Kotoko suffered their first defeat of the 2019/20 season, ending their perfect start which had included wins against Eleven Wonders and Legon Cities. The match was marred by controversy and disorder.
Earlier in the game, an unhappy confrontation erupted between Kotoko fans and security personnel. Displeased with some of the refereeing decisions, fans began throwing bottles and sachets of water onto the field, causing the game to be halted for several minutes near the end. Following the final whistle, referee Charles Bulu and his assistant required heavy police escort to safely leave the pitch.
The stray bullet incident unfolded amidst the post-match chaos and tension, leading to the serious injury of the fan.
