Tems Reveals Alternative Careers in Accounting or Mathematics Teaching

Grammy-winning Nigerian singer Tems recently engaged with her fans in a Q&A session on X (formerly Twitter), where she shared what her life might have looked like outside of music.
Responding to a fan’s curiosity about her “Plan B,” the “Me & U” hitmaker revealed that she likely would have pursued a career as an accountant or a mathematics teacher. These choices reflect her academic background in Economics, which she studied at Monash South Africa before returning to Nigeria to enter the corporate world.
The revelation underscores Tems’ drastic transition from a stable 9-to-5 career to global superstardom. Before her musical breakthrough, she worked as a digital marketer but made the bold decision to quit in January 2018 to follow her passion.
Following months of self-teaching music production, she released her debut single “Mr Rebel” later that year. Since then, she has risen to international prominence through high-profile collaborations with artists like Wizkid, Drake, and Future, cementing her status as one of Africa’s most successful musical exports while leaving her potential life in the classroom or accounting firm far behind.
