Ohemaa Mercy Calls for Love and Compassion for Homosexuals

Ghanaian gospel artiste Mercy Twum-Ampofo, widely known as Ohemaa Mercy, has publicly advocated for treating individuals involved in homosexuality with love and compassion, framing the issue as a spiritual one that requires divine intervention.

During an appearance on Starr Chat with Bola Ray (circa 2018), the successful gospel musician suggested that drawing those involved closer and speaking to them with care is the most effective way to help them turn away from the practice.

“It takes God to deliver someone from homosexuality,” she said. “We need to draw those involved closer and speak to them with care.”

Ohemaa Mercy’s remarks came at a highly sensitive time when the Akufo-Addo administration was facing significant international pressure to relax Ghana’s stance on homosexuality.

Ohemaa Mercy’s call for love and compassion represents a more empathetic, faith-based approach compared to the confrontational stance taken by political and institutional religious leaders at the time.
