Mzbel Questioned by CID Over Defamation Claims by Stacey Amoateng

Songstress Mzbel (Belinda Nana Ekua Amoah) was expected to return to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service on Tuesday, August 25, 2020, to continue answering to claims of defamation leveled against her by TV personality Stacey Amoateng.

Mzbel was officially arrested and admitted to bail on Monday, August 24, 2020, after Stacey Amoateng reported her. The accusation stemmed from remarks Mzbel allegedly made on Accra-based Onua FM, claiming that Stacey Amoateng had tested positive for HIV, information Mzbel attributed to popular prophet Nigel Gaisie.

The Public Relations Officer of the CID, DSP Juliana Obeng, confirmed the incident, stating:

“Mzbel came to the CID headquarters on her own but she was officially arrested and cautioned.”

The musician was cautioned on Section 208 of the Criminal Code, which relates to the publication of false statements, rumors, or reports likely to cause fear and alarm to the public or disturb the public peace. This offense is classified as a misdemeanor.

While the immediate outcome of the scheduled August 25 return is not publicly detailed, Nigel Gaisie’s Denial: Prophet Nigel Gaisie, the source Mzbel cited, publicly denied knowing Stacey Amoateng and claimed Mzbel was a liar, complicating Mzbel’s defense.

The case has brought significant public attention to the issue of defamation and the circulation of false reports by public figures.
