Yvonne Nelson Criticizes Colleagues for ‘Slaying’ While Ghana Movie Industry Collapses

Ghanaian actress and producer Yvonne Nelson publicly criticized her colleagues in the movie industry, asserting that they have “resorted to slaying” due to the ongoing collapse of the Ghana Movie Industry.
The actress argued that her colleagues’ focus on fashion and social media attention indicates a lack of concern for the industry’s critical state. This sentiment was expressed in early January 2020, following earlier comments she made about national leadership.
Yvonne Nelson suggested that instead of working to revive the ailing sector, her peers were prioritizing their social media presence and personal looks:
“My peeps like I said are busy slaying so they don’t even know what’s going on!”
She also used the opportunity to address government negligence toward the arts:
“As for government and the arts (movie industry) them just dey do like them dey do something kerkerh.”
Yvonne Nelson is known for her outspoken criticism of governance, which preceded her comments on the movie industry. Earlier, on November 27, 2019, she posted a Twitter thread questioning Ghanaian leaders’ commitment and accountability.
“Mr President, when are Ghanaians getting a Q&A session/time with you? Not journalists, or media personalities, I’m talking about (students, carpenters, drivers, doctors, waakye sellers, tailors, hair dressers, mothers. etc) we have a lot of questions.”
Yvonne Nelson’s stance highlights her long-standing role as an activist. She previously organized the prominent #DumsorMustStop vigil in 2015 to protest Ghana’s chronic power outages.
