Techiman Youth Leader Arrested After Anti-Fraud Protest Turns Violent

The Chairman of the Techiman Youth Association, Mr. Kwadwo Adjei, has been arrested by police after a demonstration he led against alleged fraudulent spiritualists resulted in property damage.
Adjei organized the protest in Techiman (Brong-Ahafo Region) after securing a permit from the police. The demonstration was aimed at exposing and condemning fake mallams and fetish priests who the youth claimed were swindling residents with promises of money doubling and casting spells, thereby damaging the town’s reputation.
However, following the March 18th protest, several of the targeted spiritualists reported that their properties had been burned and destroyed. The police, who had warned organizers that they would be held responsible for any violence, arrested Adjei on suspicion of leading the group that caused the damage.
As news of the arrest spread, an angry crowd of youth surrounded the Techiman Police Station demanding Adjei’s release, while supporters of the victims called for ‘instant justice.’ To prevent the situation from escalating and for Adjei’s safety, police transferred him to the Sunyani Municipal Police Station to continue the investigation into charges of property damage and threats.
