Korean Government Approves $100 Million Loan for Techiman Water Expansion Project

The south Korean Government has officially approved a US$100 million loan from the Korea EximBank (which administers the Economic Development Cooperation Fund, EDCF) to finance the Techiman Water Expansion and Rehabilitation project in the Bono East Region.

The Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL), the implementing agency, has signed an agreement with the Korean firm Messrs CHEIL-KECC-SAMAN JV to execute the project, which is scheduled to commence construction by the end of the third quarter of 2024.

According to Mr. Francis Agyei-Boateng (GWCL Chief Manager, Project Planning and Development), the project aims to expand and improve access to clean, potable water for residents in the Techiman Municipality and 12 surrounding areas, including Tuobodom, Tanoso, and Ahansua.

GWCL’s Managing Director, Dr. Clifford Braima, explained that the Ghanaian government initially requested the loan in May 2003. The project’s priority and scope were later confirmed through two fact-finding missions dispatched by the Export-Import Bank of Korea in March and July 2019.

The full project, following the final approval of the contract signing, is expected to be completed within 48 months from the start of the eight-month preparatory phase for earth-moving works.
