Techiman Celebrates World Teachers’ Day with “MIKAM Awards”

The 2019 World Teachers’ Day celebration in Techiman, Bono East Region, was held on October 11th under the theme, “Young Teachers: The Future of the Profession.”

The event, hosted at the Techiman Municipal Assembly forecourt, is an annual recognition known as the “MIKAM Awards,” introduced in 2018 by Deputy Minister Hon. Martin Agyei-Mensah Korsah (after whom the awards are named).

Mr. Isaac Nsiah Edward, the Municipal Director of Education, announced that four new categories were added this year, including Best E-Learning Teacher, Best Private School Teacher, Best Non-Teaching Staff, and Best Worker from the Education Directorate, emphasizing that the recognition now extends to crucial non-teaching personnel.

In his address, Hon. Korsah stressed that the awards are based strictly on merit and hard work, not political affiliation, and urged the community to support the educational development of children.

The top honor, the overall Best Teacher of 2019, was awarded to Mr. Gordon Nyarko, a mathematics teacher at Techiman Senior High School (TESS). The second position went to Acheampong Benjamin of Asue Methodist Junior High School (JHS), while Mr. Benjamin Adu Fosu secured the third spot. Eleven other dedicated teachers also received recognition.

Mr. Nyarko, the overall winner, expressed gratitude to Hon. Korsah for establishing the annual awards and encouraged his fellow teachers to remain committed to their profession in hopes of future recognition.
