Techiman SHS Crowned Champions of the 2020 Ghana Science Olympiad

Techiman Senior High School (SHS), located in the Bono East Region, won the 2020 Ghana Science Olympiad (GSO), triumphing over 20 other finalists at the grand finale in Accra on November 26, 2020.

The three-day competition was rigorous, testing students from 20 finalist schools in practical and written exams across several subjects, including Integrated Science, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Agricultural Science, and Mathematics. These finalists had advanced from preliminary rounds held in Sunyani and Tamale, which initially featured 231 schools nationwide.

Speakers at the awards ceremony, including Prof. Atinuke Adebanje (KNUST), praised the event for spotlighting less-endowed schools and encouraged students to pursue higher scientific achievement. The Director-General of the Ghana Education Service (GES), Prof. Kwasi Opoku-Amankwa, underscored the event’s importance, emphasizing that science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education is crucial for Ghana’s industrialization goals.

Techiman SHS’s grand prize included a giant trophy, a plaque, a certificate, and a 55-inch smart board equipped with educational content to enhance science teaching. Kumasi Senior High Technical and Wesley Grammar School placed second and third, respectively.

In individual awards, Master Mikail Tauhir (Kumasi Senior Technical School) was named the overall Best Student, receiving the Director-General’s Award, which featured laboratory equipment and a Samsung tablet. Victoria Mends (Armed Forces SHST) was recognized as the Best Girl participant. The Director of the GES Science Education Unit, Mrs. Olivia Serwaa Opare, thanked all contributors for the successful third edition of the GSO.
