“I Was Too Shy”: Rapper Guru Admits Hiding Behind Masks During First Year at Legon

Maradona Adjei Yeboah, the popular Ghanaian rapper known as Guru, has opened up about the intense social anxiety he faced during his return to academia at the University of Ghana. Despite his status as a multi-award-winning artist, Guru revealed that he spent nearly his entire first year on campus wearing hoodies and face masks to hide his identity.
He explained that transitioning from a high-profile music career to a classroom filled with Gen Z students made him feel extremely self-conscious. Fearing that his fame would be perceived as “showing off,” he even avoided driving his luxury Dodge Challenger to campus, opting instead to walk into lectures as discreetly as possible with a few close friends.
The rapper, who studied Political Science and Information Studies, noted that it took nearly two years for him to find the confidence to shed his disguise. The turning point came during his transition from Level 200 to Level 300, particularly as he prepared for his historic run for the Students’ Representative Council (SRC) Presidency.
By the time he won the election in September 2024, Guru had fully embraced his dual identity, later serving on the University’s Governing Council. Reflecting on the journey in late 2025, the outgoing SRC President credited the experience with teaching him resilience and endurance, famously stating that leading the student body at Legon has equipped him to take on national leadership roles in the future.
