HIV Cases Surge in Bono East Region; Techiman Municipality Reports Highest Number at 4,850

According to the 2023 HIV and AIDS Estimates and Projections report by the Ghana AIDS Commission (GAC), the Bono East Region has a total of 12,997 people living with HIV, with the Techiman Municipality recording the highest caseload at 4,850 individuals. Techiman also leads in new infections, reporting 246 of the region’s 714 new cases.
The GAC Regional Coordinator, Mr. Ahmed Ibrahim Bambila, attributed Techiman’s high numbers to its cosmopolitan nature and active trade activities. The most affected age group across the region is individuals aged 35 to 39 (1,910 cases), followed closely by the 40–44 and 30–34 age brackets.
To combat the rising numbers, Mr. Bambila emphasized the need for strong awareness campaigns and urged the public to get tested, noting that testing and achieving viral suppression are the best methods for prevention. In response to the crisis, the GAC has assigned implementing partners:
- Hope for Future Generation (HFFG): To focus on supporting female workers and their partners.
- West African AIDS Foundation (WAAF): To address the needs of individuals who use and inject drugs.
