Ghanaian footballer Kingsley Sarfo, a 23-year-old player for Swedish champion club Malmö FF, has been found guilty of two counts of statutory rape of a minor in Sweden and sentenced to two years and eight months in jail.
The Malmö district court delivered the verdict on Friday. Upon completion of his prison sentence, Sarfo will be deported from Sweden. He was also ordered to pay approximately US $17,000 in damages. Sarfo’s lawyer, Mikael Sundman, confirmed plans to appeal the sentence.
The offenses reportedly took place in September 2016 and June of the previous year (2018), and Sarfo has been in custody since February. His club, Malmö FF, released a brief statement indicating their board would address the issue the following week.
