Former Ghana Striker Junior Agogo Dies at Age 40

Former Ghana international striker Junior Agogo has passed away at the age of 40.

Agogo, who began his career at Sheffield Wednesday, was a fan favorite who also had spells at clubs including Nottingham Forest and Bristol Rovers before retiring at Hibernian in 2012.

Agogo represented the Black Stars 27 times, scoring 12 goals. He cemented his status as a national hero during the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations, where he scored three goals, including a memorable late winner against Nigeria in Accra.

Former teammate Laryea Kingston praised Agogo’s growing influence during that tournament, noting his dedication and strength, and remarked, “I think that was the goal that sealed his popularity in Ghana.”

The former striker suffered a debilitating stroke in 2015, which significantly affected his speech and caused him anxiety, a struggle he publicly documented in a 2017 documentary. Tributes poured in from his former clubs and teammates following the news of his death.
