Akuapem Poloo Sparks Outcry with Nude Photo for Son’s Birthday

Social media personality Rosemond Alade Brown, widely known as Akuapem Poloo, ignited a major controversy on Tuesday, June 30, 2020, after she celebrated her son’s seventh birthday by posting a nude photo of herself squatting in front of the young boy.

In the post shared on her official Instagram page, the outspoken influencer included a heartfelt message to her son, expressing gratitude for motherhood and reflecting on the “struggles, emotions and unforgettable moments” she experienced during his birth. She used the image to symbolize the profound connection she felt with him.

The controversial image quickly went viral across all social platforms, triggering widespread backlash from Ghanaians. Critics universally condemned the act as inappropriate, unnecessary, and a clear violation of the child’s rights.

The photo sparked heated national discussions about social media behavior and boundaries for public figures, parental responsibility and decency and the lengths celebrities go to for attention.

The incident was not only met with public outrage but also led to legal action. The non-governmental organization Child Rights International (CRI) took the case to court, arguing that the post constituted the publication of obscene material and amounted to domestic violence against the child.

Ultimately, the actress was arrested, arraigned, and later sentenced by an Accra Circuit Court to 90 days in prison over the publication of the “obscene material and domestic violence,” though she was later released on a fine following a successful appeal.
