Manchester United Reaches Agreement for Brazilian Winger Antony in Blockbuster Deal

Manchester United has agreed a deal with Ajax to sign 22-year-old Brazilian winger Antony in a move worth up to £85 million. The transfer fee includes an initial payment of £80.75 million, with an additional £4.25 million structured in add-ons. Antony is scheduled to arrive in Manchester soon to complete his medical and finalize the transfer, which would require a work permit before he can debut.
Financial and Historical Significance
This massive transfer makes Antony one of the most expensive players in Premier League history, placing him as the joint-second most expensive signing in Manchester United’s history, alongside defender Harry Maguire. The club’s record remains the £89 million paid for Paul Pogba.
Antony’s fee also positions him as one of the joint-fourth most expensive Premier League acquisitions ever, exceeded only by the deals for Paul Pogba (United), Romelu Lukaku (Chelsea), and Jack Grealish (Manchester City).
Player Profile and Ten Hag Reunion
Antony is highly familiar with Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag, having played under him since joining Ajax from Sao Paulo in 2020. During his time at Ajax, Antony registered impressive numbers, contributing 25 goals and 22 assists in 82 appearances across all competitions, including 7 goal contributions in his 11 Champions League outings.
The 22-year-old is also an established international, having made his debut for Brazil in October 2021 and scoring two goals in nine appearances for his national team.
Antony will be Manchester United’s fifth major signing of the summer, following:
- Lisandro Martinez (former Ajax teammate)
- Casemiro (Real Madrid)
- Tyrell Malacia (Feyenoord)
- Christian Eriksen (free transfer)
The imminent signing comes amid ongoing speculation concerning the future and morale of veteran striker Cristiano Ronaldo.
