Football Icon Diego Maradona Dies at 60

Football legend and one of the greatest players of all time, Diego Maradona, has died at the age of 60 after suffering a heart attack at his home in Buenos Aires. The former Argentina attacking midfielder and manager had undergone successful surgery for a brain blood clot earlier in November 2020 and was due to receive treatment for alcohol dependency.

Maradona is internationally renowned for captaining Argentina to victory in the 1986 World Cup, a tournament highlighted by his infamous “Hand of God” goal against England in the quarter-finals.

Tributes poured in from around the globe, led by Argentina and Barcelona forward Lionel Messi, who stated that Maradona was “eternal.” Messi said, “A very sad day for all Argentines and football. He leaves us but does not leave, because Diego is eternal. I keep all the beautiful moments lived with him and I send my condolences to all his family and friends.” The Argentine Football Association expressed its “deepest sorrow for the death of our legend,” adding, “You will always be in our hearts.”

The President of Argentina, Alberto Fernandez, declared three days of national mourning, honoring the football icon by saying, “You took us to the top of the world. You made us immensely happy. You were the greatest of them all. Thank you for having existed, Diego. We’re going to miss you all our lives.”

During his illustrious club career, Maradona played for giants such as Barcelona and Napoli, where he famously won two Serie A titles. He also represented Argentinos Juniors, Sevilla, and Boca Juniors and Newell’s Old Boys in his native Argentina.
