Akuapem Poloo Sentenced to 90 Days in Jail for Obscene Post with Son

Ghanaian actress Rosemond Brown, widely known as Akuapem Poloo, was sentenced to 90 days (three months) in jail by an Accra Circuit Court on Friday, April 16, 2021, for publishing an obscene photo with her son on social media.

The conviction stemmed from a highly controversial photo shared on June 30, 2020, to celebrate her son’s seventh birthday. The image depicted Akuapem Poloo naked and squatting in front of her son, sparking public outrage. The non-governmental organization, Child Rights International (CRI), initiated legal action against her.

Akuapem Poloo faced three charges:

  1. Publication of obscene materials (contrary to the Criminal Offences Act, 1960).
  2. Engaging in domestic violence: conduct that violated another person’s privacy and integrity.
  3. Engaging in domestic violence: conduct that undermined the dignity and worth of another person.

She pleaded guilty to all charges and was convicted based on her own plea. The Circuit Court, presided over by Her Honour Christina Caan, stressed that a custodial sentence was necessary to serve as a deterrent. Given that the boy’s birthday is on June 30, the sentence ensured the actress would miss her son’s 8th birthday.
