China commits $30m to renovate Ghana’s National Theatre

The Ghana National Theatre is prepared to undergo a major renovation following a strategic agreement between the Ghanaian and Chinese governments. This project aims to modernize the thirty-year-old cultural landmark, which has recently struggled with technical and infrastructural decay.

The initiative gained momentum after a high-level meeting between Chinese delegates, the Executive Director of the Theatre, Henry Herbert Malm, and the Minister of Tourism, Culture, and Creative Arts, Abla Dzifa Gomashie.

The funding for this overhaul was secured during President John Dramani Mahama’s recent state visit to China, where President Xi Jinping committed approximately $30 million to support both the theatre’s refurbishment and the development of an off-road market.

The leader of the Chinese delegation, Li Yaohong, emphasized that the renovation is a tribute to Ghana’s significant cultural heritage in West Africa. Given the budget, the initial focus will be on the most critical repairs, including the modernization of air-conditioning systems, stage halls, and storage facilities.

Additionally, the project will implement advanced safety features such as CCTV surveillance, modern firefighting equipment, and secure fencing to ensure a world-class environment for both performers and patrons.

This facelift is expected to revitalize the home of the National Dance Company, the National Symphony Orchestra, and the National Drama Company, restoring the facility to the architectural and cultural prominence it held when it was first commissioned in 1992.
