Commission Concludes Public Hearings on Proposed Bono East Region

The Commission of Inquiry has finished its public hearings in Techiman regarding the proposal to create the Bono East Region out of the existing Brong Ahafo Region. The sessions were held to gather input from locals, including chiefs and residents, on the necessary development for the proposed new region.

Participants strongly argued that the current size of the Brong Ahafo Region has led to underdevelopment, security concerns, and perceived marginalization for those in the eastern parts. Key issues cited include poor road networks, inadequate clean water and electricity supply, and insufficient educational and health facilities (noting that the single government hospital, Kintampo Hospital, is severely lacking). They also reported that civil servants are reluctant to accept postings due to these poor amenities.

Justice Stephen Alan Brobbey, Chairman of the Commission, stated the hearings were historic and confirmed that if the Commission recommends the region’s creation, a referendum will follow.

The initiative received broad support from political and traditional leaders. Brong Ahafo Regional Minister Mr. Kwaku Asomah-Cheremeh and Pimapim Yaw Kabrese V, President of the Regional House of Chiefs, endorsed the proposal, arguing it would bring governance and development closer to the people.

Traditional leaders like Oseadeyo Akumfi Ameyaw IV of Techiman and Nana Osei Gyan Ababio of Atebubu asserted that dividing the current region is essential to rectify the unbalanced development caused by its large size. Residents, including schoolchildren, showed strong support for the proposed Bono East Region, which would encompass districts like Techiman, Kintampo, Nkoranza, and Atebubu-Amantin.
