Techiman Fire Service Seizes Mini Coal Pots in Markets to Prevent Major Fire Outbreaks

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) in the Techiman district has started seizing mini coal pots – commonly used for brewing local tea like ataaya – within market centers. This action is a direct response to a rising number of fire incidents, including two major blazes recently recorded at the Techiman Central Market.

The local effort aligns with a broader national trend of destructive market fires, notably the massive blaze that swept through Accra’s Kantamanto Market on January 1, 2025, which destroyed thousands of stalls and caused millions of cedis in financial losses, displacing approximately 8,000 traders.

The GNFS is intensifying efforts to eliminate potential fire risks posed by open flames in congested market areas.
