Techiman Main Market Temporarily Closed to Curb COVID-19 Spread

The Techiman Municipal Assembly in the Bono East Region has ordered the temporary closure of the Techiman Main Market starting Wednesday, April 22, 2020, as a measure to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Municipal Chief Executive John Donyina explained that the decision was necessary because the market attracts a large number of traders from across the country weekly, posing a high risk of outbreak. The action aims to protect vulnerable populations in the municipality and was finalized after consultations with the Techiman Security Council, the Traditional Council, and other key stakeholders.

To ensure continuous commerce while maintaining safety, the Assembly has established alternative satellite markets in school parks and open spaces around the town. These locations will operate using a shift system to effectively enforce social distancing guidelines.

This local directive aligns with a national warning issued by the Minister for Local Government and Rural Development, Hajia Alima Mahama, concerning the closure of markets that fail to comply with health and safety protocols. Similar market closures and relocations have been implemented in other parts of the country.
