Tiger Woods Returns to Competition with Son Charlie at PNC Championship

Golf legend Tiger Woods is set to make his competitive return, his first since suffering catastrophic leg and ankle injuries in a February 2021 car crash, by competing in the PNC Championship next weekend in Orlando. The tournament is a relaxed, parent-child event that pairs 20 former major champions with a family member. Woods will be playing alongside his son, Charlie.

The decision to play follows Woods’ first major public appearance last week at his Hero World Challenge tournament. During that week, he was seen on the driving range, demonstrating a swing that was smooth enough to generate speculation about a potential Masters return, though he has not yet committed to any major events.

Woods suffered devastating injuries on February 23, 2021, in a single-car rollover wreck in Los Angeles, requiring weeks of hospital care and months of therapy, and he admitted he is still dealing with pain. While he ruled out a return to full-time golf, Woods confirmed he intends to play individual tournaments and “hit-and-giggle” charitable events, which includes the PNC Championship.

“As far as playing at the Tour level, I don’t know when that’s going to happen,” Woods said last week. “Now, I’ll play a round here or there, a little hit-and-giggle. I can do something like that.”

The 36-hole PNC Championship uses an alternating-shot format and allows the use of a golf cart. This format is beneficial to Woods’ recovery, as it will allow his son, Charlie, to manage some of the shots his father might find too physically straining. Last year, Team Woods finished in seventh place with a score of -20, five strokes behind the winners, Team Thomas (Justin Thomas and his father).

The PNC Championship, featuring Tiger Woods and his son Charlie, comprised a full field of 20 major champions paired with a family member.
